A CEILIDH FOR KOBANE – Wednesday 1 November – SOAS

In recent years the SOAS Ceilidh Band has been active in the refugee camps
in Calais and Dunkirk. In that time we have met many people from Kurdistan –
Kurds who come from Iraq, Iran, Turkey and Syria. We have had good musical
exchanges with them. Next year (May, 2018) it is our plan to travel to
Kurdistan. We have two objectives. First – to learn more about the music,
songs and dances of the Kurdish people. Second – to do practical
volunteering work in the refugee camps that have been set up to deal with
the displacement of many thousands of people in the region.

As a first step toward this trip, we are organising a fund-raising KURDISH
CEILIDH at SOAS on Wednesday 1 November.

That date is also World Kobane Day, a day of solidarity for supporting the
rebuilding of the Kurdish town that led the first heroic resistance to ISIS
in 2014-15.

The SOAS Ceilidh Band will play tunes from our traditional repertoire. A
great evening! There will also be a programme of Kurdish dance music, and
the public will be invited to learn the dance steps of Kurdish dance.

A food buffet will be provided.

Admission to the event is FREE and is open to SOAS people and to the general
public. No booking required – just turn up. Suggested donation for the food
is £5.
